Garageland, the long established gig promoter for emerging Irish music talent, has announced a new ten week residency in St Andrews Lane Theatre in Dublin. Artists already confirmed for The Garage Gigs Series 40 include Red Empire, Still Room, Legion Of Ape, Darragh Cullen, The Juice, My Pyrrhic Victory, Shove, Renton, The Crossfire, Cavaliers, Saints Boulevard, Mount Hollow, and The Klares. The shows start on May 22 and run every Thursday until July 24. Doors 8.00pm and admission is €10.00. The new run of gigs sees Garageland forge a number of new partnerships and opportunities for independent artists in Ireland, hooking up with the American based web channel GoIndieTV, and partnering with new online platform IndieMusic.ie. Since 2000, Garageland has been providing a first stage or helping hand to over 2,000 bands including the likes of The Script, Ham Sandwich, Ryan Sheridan, Delorentos, Royseven, and many more There are still limited places left for independent bands and artists for Series 40. Belfast Band The Left Backs – Ben Watt-Doak (front), and (from left) Matt Hedley, Max Lozowsky and Lucas MacPherson – with their award. It's no wonder that Northern Irish indie band The Left Backs are jumping for joy. The teenage four-piece have just been named Best Band at this year's Irish Youth Music Awards. They beat stiff competition from 15 other music acts from Louth, Tipperary, Dublin and Newry to claim the top prize in Dublin's Aviva Stadium. The Left Backs comprise drummer Matt Hedley from Grosvenor Grammar School, lead guitarist Max Lozowsky and rhythm guitarist/lead singer Ben Watt-Doak from Methodist College, and bass player Lucas McPherson from Lagan College. The Belfast quartet, all aged 17, started off covering hits by their favourite bands – such as The Arctic Monkeys, The Fratellis and Derry's own The Undertones. Successful Irish band have today announced their split after 11 years. A statement on their facebook page said Dear All, With heavy hearts we’ve decided to bring down the curtain on our Royseven adventure. Rather than disappointment, we feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and satisfaction for the last eleven years of creativity, performance and friendship. To those in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain who worked with us, supported or encouraged us, we’d like to thank you for helping to create experiences that were once mere childhood dreams. We each intend to continue writing and performing but this musical chapter has come to an end. We’ll be forever grateful for the wonderful memories you’ve gifted us. Legendary Dublin rock group Aslan have just announced details of their much anticipated return to the live arena with a show at The Olympia Theatre on Saturday May 31st 2014. Band Statement: In February 2013 Christy Dignam, the lead singer with ASLAN, was diagnosed with cancer and the band stopped performing live shows. With the exception of the Night For Christy which saw performances from many of Irelands best performers including U2, Brezzie, Danny O Rielly, Ryan Sheridan and Horslips, to name a few, ASLAN have not performed as a band for over a year. Christy, having recently received the news that his treatment is working,has decided that now is the time for him and ASLAN to get back to doing what they do best and do a live show. Dublin band PictureHouse have teamed-up with Irish visual artist Barry Jazz Finnegan to create a striking video for Rules of Science, their new single in tribute to Nelson Mandela. As prominent members of Dublin's art scene, PictureHouse singer Dave Browne says, “I bumped into Barry at a party and played him the song, explaining the song encompasses the message of hope against despair, and he suggested he make the video, as he believed Nelson Mandela would have broken the rules of science for his people.” Already been playlisted by BBC Radio 2 in the UK and RTE Radio 1 in Ireland, the single’s video took the 32 year old artist thirteen hours to complete, with his only reference point being an image of Mandela on his iPod.
